Heat exchanger, condenser, and HVAC tube does two jobs at once: it has to transfer heat efficiently across its wall, and it has to hold pressure and resist corrosion on both sides of that wall for years of continuous service. We manufacture tube for this application across 304, 316, and 321 — the right grade depends primarily on what's flowing through and around the tube, not on thermal performance alone, since all three conduct heat similarly well.

Heat exchanger tube is also frequently bent into U-shapes for compact bundle designs, which places real demands on the tube's ductility and requires the tube to be supplied in a condition that can take that bend without cracking or thinning unevenly.

Where this tube is used

  • Shell-and-tube heat exchangers — the most common configuration, where tube bundle design and U-bend capability directly affect how compact and efficient the finished exchanger can be.
  • Condensers — process and HVAC condensers both depend on consistent wall thickness for predictable heat transfer across the full tube bundle, not just at a sampled point.
  • Feedwater heaters — typically specified to ASTM A688, often operating at higher pressure and temperature than general process heat exchangers.
  • Chillers and air handling units — HVAC-scale thermal transfer where corrosion resistance against condensation and cleaning chemicals matters over the equipment's long service life.
  • Process cooling equipment — general industrial cooling applications where tube reliability directly affects uptime.

Which grade do you need?

GradeGeneral positioningTypically considered when
304/304LGood general corrosion resistanceNon-corrosive fluids, general-purpose thermal transfer
316/316LAdds molybdenum for chloride/corrosion resistanceChloride-bearing or chemically aggressive process fluids, seawater-cooled condensers
321Titanium-stabilized for weld-zone integrity at sustained heatHigher-temperature operation, particularly where the tube is welded into the bundle

Standards this tube is supplied to.

ASTM A249
The primary standard for welded austenitic stainless tube specifically intended for boiler, superheater, heat exchanger, and condenser service
ASTM A688
Welded austenitic stainless steel tube for feedwater heater applications

Common questions.

What standard governs welded tube for heat exchangers?
ASTM A249 is the standard most commonly specified for welded austenitic stainless steel tube used in heat exchanger, condenser, boiler, and superheater applications.
Can heat exchanger tube be bent into U-shapes?
Yes, when supplied in an appropriately annealed condition — this is a common design requirement for compact shell-and-tube heat exchanger bundles. Confirm your bend requirement with us at the time of order.
What grade is best for a condenser handling seawater or chloride-rich cooling water?
316/316L is generally preferred over 304/304L in chloride-exposed condenser applications, due to its higher resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion — though the right choice always depends on your specific water chemistry.
What's the difference between ASTM A249 and A688?
A249 covers welded tube broadly for boiler, heat exchanger, and condenser service; A688 is specifically for feedwater heater applications, which often run at higher pressure and temperature. Tell us your application and we'll confirm the right standard.
