We manufacture welded 304 and 304L stainless steel tube from 6mm to 63.5mm OD with 0.4mm to 2mm wall thickness, to ASTM A249, A269, and A554 standards. 304 is the most widely used austenitic stainless grade, offering good general corrosion resistance with 18-20% chromium and 8-10.5% nickel; 304L is the low-carbon variant, used where welding may otherwise cause sensitization.

304 vs 316 — which do you need?

304316
MolybdenumNone2–3%
Chloride/pitting resistanceModerateHigher
Typical useGeneral-purpose, food/pharma, indoor/mild environmentsMarine, chemical processing, chloride-exposed environments
Relative costLowerHigher

In short: if your application involves chlorides, marine exposure, or aggressive chemical media, 316 is usually the safer choice; for general-purpose and indoor/food-grade use, 304 typically performs well at lower cost.

Common questions.

What's the difference between 304 and 304L stainless steel tube?
304L has a lower maximum carbon content (0.03% vs 0.08%), which reduces the risk of carbide precipitation (sensitization) during welding — making it the preferred choice where the tube will be welded and used in a corrosive environment afterward.
What standard governs 304 welded tube for heat exchangers?
ASTM A249 is the standard most commonly specified for welded stainless tube used in heat exchanger, condenser, and boiler applications.
Can 304 stainless steel tube be used outdoors?
Yes for most general outdoor and architectural use, but in coastal/marine or de-icing-salt environments, 316 is generally recommended over 304 due to its higher chloride resistance.
